      The People's Republic of China
      (PRC) (zhōng huá rén mín gong hé guó 中華人民共和國) commonly known as China, is the largest country in East Asia and the most populous in the world with over 1.3 billion people, approximately one-fifth of the world's population. It is a socialist republic (specifically a people's democratic dictatorship according to its constitution) ruled by the Communist Party of China (zhōng guó gòng chǎn dǎng 中國共產黨) under a single-party system, and has jurisdiction over twenty-two provinces, five autonomous regions, which are Xinjiang (xīn jiāng 新疆), Inner Mongolia (nèi měng gǔ 內蒙古), Tibet (xī zàng 西藏), Ningxia (níng xià 寧夏), and Guangxi (guǎng xī 廣西); four municipalities, which are Beijing (běi jīng 北京), Tianjin (tiān jīn 天津), Shanghai (shàng hǎi 上海), and Chongqing (chóng qìng 重慶); and two highly autonomous Special Administrative Regions (tè bié xíng zhèng qū 特別行政區), which are Hong Kong (xiāng gǎng 香港) and Macau (ào mén 澳門).

      National Day
      (guó qìng jié 國慶節) originally refers to the good or festive time. In ancient times of China, the most festive thing of one country must be the new emperor enthroned or the birthday of the king, which was regarded as the National Day. Since the People’s Republic of China was founded on October 1, 1949 with a ceremony at Tian’anmen Square, the Central People’s Government passed the Resolution on the National Day of the PRC (guān yú zhōng huá rén mín gòng hé guó guó qìng jié de jué yì 關于中華人民共和國國慶日的決議) on December 2, 1949 and declared that October 1 is the National Day.

      The temple fair (miào huì 廟會) is a kind of social activity in China. Legend has it that it originated in ancient times when people offered sacrifices to the village god, which later gradually evolved into a marketplace for people to exchange products and a place for cultural performance. Temple fair in old China had a unique status in ordinary people’s life. It is the time to worship gods, pray for the blessing. It is also a great time to have fun. All the traditional shows went on at the temple fairs, talk shows (xiàng sheng 相聲), banner shows (wǔ qí 舞旗), kongfu shows (wǔ shù 武術), lion shows (wǔ shī 舞獅), etc. It became a paradise for the kids. Fortunately this century old tradition is still preserved today.

      (zhōng guó bù xié 中國布鞋) have a history of more than three thousand years. In Houma Shi (hóu mǎ shì 侯馬市), Shanxi Province (shān xī shěng 山西省), there discovered the unearthed warrior in West Zhou Dynasty (xī zhōu 西周) wore the cloth shoes, which is the earliest handicraft cloth shoes. The cloth shoes were mainly handmade before the People's Republic of China was proclaimed, such as embroidery shoes. Chinese people are very fond of them for they are handmade, soft, and comfortable and ventilate. After 1949, the Chinese cloth shoes reached its peak period. There were many cloth shoes factories in our country which produced lots of cloth shoes.
